Scott’s Thoughts: Frederik Andersen’s “Rough Year”

The Leafs are three games into the 2020-21 season, and naturally, the world has already ended for Leafs Nation. After a brief training camp and no preseason, the Leafs were predictably sloppy in a 5-4 OT win opening night against Montreal, were significantly more sloppier against the Senators on Friday, and finally seemed to figure stuff out a little bit on Saturday’s rematch against Ottawa until score effects kicked in in the third.
Now, it’s too early in the season to really come to any conclusions about this team just yet. You could chalk the sloppy games up to rust and trying to figure out systems, and you could chalk the good game up to the fact that they were playing the Senators. As Bob McKenzie always said, he never really starts evaluating players and teams for about a month after the season due to the fact that it’s mostly just noise. And he’s right.
While even at that point, 15-20 games is still a really small sample size, you can start to use it to get a better idea of the teams and players. Three games is definitely too small.
Now, one player on the …

— Amazon Prime Video Canada (@PrimeVideoCA) January 13, 2021

Amazon didn’t reveal if the series will be included with Prime, or if it will need to be purchased separately. Nonetheless, this isn’t the first and surely won’t be the last time that a documentary team has followed an NHL team.
They are, however, touting “unparalleled behind-the-scenes access” to the Leafs, which is interesting given the aforementioned pandemic and the plethora of restrictions in place.
We’ll be sure to update you with more information as it becomes available in terms of when the series airs.

Jokerit terminates Mikko Lehtonen’s contract and he’ll likely be heading to Toronto soon

With the state of a potential 2020-21 season remaining up in the air, one member of the Leafs roster made the move to prepare for his arrival in Toronto.

#Jokerit and Mikko Lehtonen have mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract. Next stop for him is Toronto.
Thank you Mikko and all the best in North America!#KHL pic.twitter.com/OgrrJVMuVV
— Jokerit Helsinki (@Jokerit_EN) November 20, 2020

This comes mere hours following updates regarding the state of recent meetings between the NHL and NHLPA in regards to negotiation on salaries. By no means does this guarantee a new season is happening, but Lehtonen wouldn’t have done this if there wasn’t any indication that he would get to play for the Leafs in 2021.
While Lehtonen’s campaign with Jokerit was shorter than expected, he still made the most of it by posting eight goals, nine assists, and 17 points in only 17 games played. Had it not been for a potential exposure to COVID-19 that put his season on pause for two weeks, the aforementioned numbers might have been even higher.
Now that Lehtonen will soon be on his way to Toronto, you can expect the likes of Joe Thornton, …

NHL hoping 2020-21 season can be played in full

The NHL says they’re hoping for the 2020-21 season to be played in full.
The NHL’s Bill Daly told TSN’s Pierre LeBrun they don’t want to disrupt the next season.

Notable takeaway from our interview with Daly, when it comes to all the different scheduling scenarios:“The only definite for us, is we certainly don’t want to do anything around a resumption of play this season that will impact our ability to have a full season next year.’’
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) March 18, 2020

“The only definite for us is we certainly don’t want to do anything around a resumption of play this season that will impact our ability to have a full season next year,” Daly said.
In the last few days, reports have surfaced about top NHL players recommending playoffs be played in the summer, while NHL front offices appear to favor a 24-team playoffs with a best-of-three play in.
The league is clearly trying to exhaust all options for awarding a Stanley Cup champion this year, but they’re also making it clear they don’t want it …
