4 most insane stats from Toronto Raptors’ domination of Warriors

The Toronto Raptors appeared to be a collection of dead men walking after winning just one game in the month of March, and a matchup against the Golden State Warriors didn’t look very promising. However, Gary Trent Jr., Pascal Siakam, and the rest of the Raptors were given a gift from the basketball gods before […]

Mark Shapiro talks about Spring Training broadcasts, Blue Jays home games, and more!

Mark Shapiro appeared on The Bob McCown Podcast on Wednesday and spoke about a handful of interesting things, including the ongoing broadcast drama of Blue Jays Spring Training games and where the team will be playing its home games come the regular season.

On the Spring Training broadcasts, or lack thereof…
A big storyline so far this year is the fact that Blue Jays baseball is back and nobody is able to watch it. Even more abnormal, we aren’t able to hear most of the Grapefruit games on the radio because Sportsnet has axed that part of its production.
As we learned last week, Sportsnet will only be producing three Grapefruit games this spring and they’ll all come in late-March. Otherwise, we’re relying on Toronto’s opponents to have either a television or radio stream to be able to consume these games. And then, come regular season time, the Blue Jays will have a TV broadcast featuring Dan Shulman, Buck Martinez, and Pat Tabler simulcast on the radio, leaving Ben Wagner somewhere in limbo.
When asked about the broadcast situation, Shapiro remained fairly tight-lipped, and ultimately reiterated what he said a couple of weeks ago about how …

Ken Rosenthal believes the Blue Jays will have to “pay a premium” to lure free agents

Ken Rosenthal appeared on Tim and Sid (which was actually not Tim and Side but Arash Madani and Stephen Brunt) on Friday with some, uh, less than encouraging words about the Blue Jays and their pursuit of a game-changing free agent.

To paraphrase, Rosenthal was asked by Madani who he figured the Blue Jays would add in free agency, to which Rosenthal replied that he had no idea, though they’ve been in on pretty much everyone out there. Rosenthal then went on to say that he believes that top free agents will be more inclined to sign with American teams, putting the Blue Jays at a bit of a disadvantage…
My feel with them, not that they’re going to get used, but that unless they pay a premium, that guys are going to go and stick with the American teams.
Let’s look at [George] Springer, for example. Here’s a guy that seems to have sincere interest in the Jays and they seem to have sincere interest in him. But he’s from Connecticuit and if the Mets come at him and the money is roughly the same, will he want to stay as close to home …

Ross Atkins says Vlad Jr. could still play third base and Tanner Roark will be a part of the 2021 starting rotation

Ross Atkins appeared on Bob McCown’s podcast on Wednesday and offered some interesting information about the team heading into the off-season and into 2021.

The first little bit is kind of a slog as McCown, John Shannon, and Atkins talk about the World Series and Kevin Cash’s controversial decision to pull Blake Snell early and, naturally, the debate between old- and new-school baseball.
Anyways, at the half-way point, they shift from talking generally about baseball strategy and start getting into how Atkins views his roster and where the Blue Jays might upgrade. There are three interesting points I’ve broken down…

On the starting pitching rotation…
Shannon: How close are you to knowing what your five-man rotation is?
Atkins: We need to add to our pitching. We feel like we have a great starting point with Hyun Jin Ryu and the other pieces we think could be making significant impacts. We talk about the names all the time.
There’s several that are more prevalent, like Hatch and Kay and Merryweather, the strides they made this year. Nate Pearson is one everyone is very familiar with. We acquired Ross Stripling. We’re very confident in saying Tanner Roark will …

News and Notes: Kyle Dubas talks about facing the Blue Jackets, whether this year’s Stanley Cup will have an asterisk, and more

Kyle Dubas appeared on Sportsnet’s Tim & Sid and TSN’s Overdrive on Wednesday in order to discuss various Leafs’ related topics in the wake of the NHL officially announcing its plan to move forward with a 24-team playoff this summer.

On how he feels about how the Leafs stack up against the Blue Jackets…
DUBAS: I haven’t really spent a ton of time yet focusing on the matchup precisely. I think our focus right now has to be on our own team and what we can do to control everything that we do. The one thing that we have stressed has been that there is going to be a massive advantage and edge to the teams that come back in great physical condition and great shape and are able to guard against injuries and all of the other things that are going to crop up as we do something that is unprecedented — which is return right back into the heat of competition.
They’re obviously a very, very well-coached and well-managed team and have a great identity to them. We are certainly not taking them lightly and we know what …

Toronto Raptors: Stock Take, and OG Anunoby stands above the rest

The Toronto Raptors appeared to show a few more cracks than intended in their worst week of the season so far. Whose stock rose and who fell this week? Well, I, for one, am glad that week is done and in the books now. I imagine the Toronto Raptors are pretty happy this one is […]

Daily Duce: Shapiro talks pitching market, Anthopolous gets himself in trouble, and more!

Daily???!!!

Mark Shapiro appeared on Sportsnet 590’s Lead Off with Ashley, Ziggy and Scotty Mac on Thursday morning to talk about a handful of off-season related topics. I’m going to focus on a couple of things that are interesting in regards to getting an idea of how the front office plans to tackle free agency this winter.
SN: Looking at the 2020 iterations of our Toronto Blue Jays, there’s under $40 million committed to payroll as of now. So I need to know… What’s your best offer for Gerrit Cole going to be?
Shapiro: He’s certainly a very rare talent to be available in free agency. Almost every team out there is looking for starting pitching, which is not surprising, and certainly, every team could use a No. 1 starter. We’re going to have to be aggressive on every level of the free-agent starting pitcher landscape. We recognize that as players go into the situation, they have all the things that are important to them, they look at geography, how that aligns with their personal situation, their family, they look at spring training, and where that location is, they look at the competitiveness of team, they look at …
