3 reasons for Toronto Raptors fans to be thankful this season

The Toronto Raptors are finally back in Canada after an extended absence due to the pandemic. While wins haven’t come as frequently as some may have hoped, this team is doing everything that they can to set themselves up nicely for the future on the backs of players like Scottie Barnes, Fred VanVleet, and OG […]

Toronto Raptors: Full roster of 20 players entering training camp

The Toronto Raptors are back in Canada, and while the departure of Kyle Lowry and their poor run of form has done a number on their chances to compete for a championship, the roster is still packed to the brim with intriguing players. Toronto has a completely new look to kick off this new era, […]

Canadian Federal Government close to approving reduction in quarantine time for NHL players

I guess there is no doubt that the NHL matters in Canada after this one, as it appears the league has successfully lobbied to reduce the quarantine time for players in advance of the April 12th trade deadline.

Federal government poised to approve a 7-day quarantine with extra testing for NHL players traded from American teams to Canadian teams before the April 12th trade deadline. Government source says all provinces with NHL teams have approved of the measures.
— CBC News Alerts (@CBCAlerts) March 25, 2021

So first off, I can’t imagine anyone else on the other side of the border looking to come into Canada is particularly excited to see this news, but that’s without knowing any of the additional details. There are potentially additional testing requirements, and costs that are being absorbed by the team instead of the government that likely makes this move palatable for them to approve. Given that we’re not a political blog, none of us are epidemiologists, and the details are limited to the tweet above at this point, we’ll hold back any judgement on how this is playing out.
From a hockey perspective, there are numerous benefits to a team like the …

Can Canada’s own Elijah Fisher save Toronto basketball?

Canada has slowly become a hub for NBA talent Toronto saw the odd Todd MacCulloch or Jamaal Magloire slip through the cracks, but the city wasn’t turning out lottery prospects left and right for the last few decades. In the year 2021, however, Canada is the second-highest exporter of NBA talent, and the players coming into […]

Six Maple Leafs prospects set to compete in the World Junior Championships

Team Canada was the first country to unveil their final roster for the upcoming World Junior Championships on Friday afternoon and despite no Leafs being included on the Canadian squad, the organization will still be well represented at the tournament.
The rest of the rosters began to trickle out early Saturday morning and, along with the confirmation that top prospect Nick Robertson will not be joining the American squad, came the news of six Leafs prospects who have been selected to represent their country in the pursuit of WJC Gold.

Robertson hasn’t left Canada since May to put himself in the best position to win a job with the #leafs. He loved his world junior experience last year, but told me recently that he’s focused on the NHL: “You know every day is kind of a tryout for me.”https://t.co/rbMREsXtqa

The Leafs’ most recent first round pick, Rodion Amirov, along with 2019 fourth rounder Mikhail Abramov and and 2020 fourth rounder Artur Akhtyamov will suit up for Russia. Amirov is expected to be one of Russia’s top forwards and he is likely to play on their top line and power play unit while also …

Happy John Tavares Is A Toronto Maple Leaf Day!

Well, “creation of Canada”, you had a solid 151-year run as the main reason to celebrate July 1st but I’m afraid all good things must come to an end and be replaced by better things. Today we celebrate the two-year anniversary of John Tavares coming home.
Tavares leaving the Islanders to sign with the Leafs was one of the most shocking events in NHL free agency history. For Leafs fans, it was sweet vindication. For years this fan base has heard it from other fans, saying “Leafs fans think every player is going to Toronto!”, and for the most part they were right: we went through this with Brad Richards, Rick Nash, Steven Stamkos, and various other big names over the last decade and a half with none of them donning the Maple Leaf. For a long time, the Leafs were in the position of being that person someone flirts with to get their partner to become jealous. Never a true threat, just a decoy.
John Tavares changed all that.
Elliotte Friedman’s reporting on How the Leafs signed John Tavares is a fascinating read. The article details how the free agency pitch …

Bracco, Timashov, and Harpur on the trading block

Last night on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman reported on the Headlines segment that Leafs players Jeremy Bracco, Dmytro Timashov, and Ben Harpur are all being shopped.
For me, Bracco comes as no surprise. In now his fifth season since he was drafted late in the second round, Bracco has still yet to develop his game to the NHL level. Despite being second in the AHL in scoring last season, Bracco couldn’t crack the Leafs roster this season, and at 22, he’s starting to reach that age where we figure out what he is. Bracco is one of the best passers in the Leafs organization, but he just hasn’t rounded out his game enough to be NHL ready.
However, he’s still young enough for another team to take a shot at him, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Leafs to see what they can get out of him, especially since it seems like he won’t fit on the Leafs depth charts.
Harpur also isn’t much of a surprise. He was more of a throw in to the Zaitsev-Ceci deal, and while there was …

Maple Leafs Pregame #32: 5 Things to Watch for against the Canucks

The Leafs are heading out to Western Canada this week. That means two things:
Leafs fans complaining about the start time of games
Other fans complaining about the number of Leafs fans at their games
The important thing is that all hockey fans get to complain and that’s what we love to do the most.
