Leafs sign a new (future Vezina winning?) goaltender

Why not put pressure on the guy before the ink is even dry on his contract? We’ll spend the rest of this post walking back the title to something reasonable, but the we’ll start off by noting the organization’s shift towards bringing in as many goaltending prospects as possible in past few years. Now we’ll tell you who the new guy is…

We’ve signed goaltender Erik Källgren to a two-year, two-way contract. #LeafsForever

So that’s the guy. What we know about him comes largely from his eliteprospects page. He’s 24, 25 at the start of next season. He’s 6’3 and 198 lbs, so he’s sized like your prototypical goaltender, he’s Swedish, he’s a former pick of the Coyotes, but was buried behind a couple of their goaltending prospects who are now establishing themselves, and he was a teammate of Leafs prospect Pontus Holmberg this year, which means he was part of that championship team. Fun fact there, he had a .930 save percentage in the playoffs.

News and Notes: Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci will not re-sign, Joel Ward considered for a coaching spot, and more

Two defencemen without a new contract won’t be getting one from the Leafs this October.
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic went on First Up 1050 and revealed that both Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci will be testing the free-agent market in a few week’s time.

Pierre LeBrun on First Up 1050: “This won’t shock anyone, I’m not dropping any news here … I was told by a source yesterday that Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci know that they’re headed to market and not re-signing with the Maple Leafs.” #LeafsForever
— NHL News (@PuckReportNHL) September 30, 2020

This is not a shocking revelation since it appeared to be heading in this direction for the last few months, but I’m sure a bunch of Leafs fans are relieved to hear it nonetheless. Both players were brought in last July 1st with good intentions but neither of them were able to make it work in Toronto.
Ceci was acquired in the Nikita Zaitsev trade and had a tumultuous relationship with the fanbase, most notably frustration over him continuously being paired with Morgan Rielly (although Kyle Dubas did come to Ceci’s defence a lot throughout the season). He produced one goal, seven assists, …

What should the Leafs do with Jason Spezza?

A one-year, $700,000 contract — that’s the price the Toronto Maple Leafs paid to have Jason Spezza on their roster this season.
It was a challenging year for the 37-year-old, who spent most of this season on the fourth line. One of the lowest points for him as a Maple Leaf came in the home opener, when he was scratched because of what former head coach, Mike Babcock said was lack of special teams practice.
He signed for the league minimum to live out his childhood dream of playing for the Leafs, and Babcock ruined it before the first game of the regular season.
For Spezza though, he was obviously disappointed, but that moment didn’t stop him from being what Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs wanted him to be — a role model for the younger players.
After most Leafs practices, you’d see Spezza working alongside players like Mitch Marner, helping with face-offs, or other parts of their games. Most recently, it was Nick Robertson, who shadowed the 17-year veteran.
“We’ve been able to get to know each other a little bit. I try to help him out with a few …

What to expect from Kenny Agostino this summer

When Kenny Agostino was signed to a two-year contract back on Canada Day 2019, it was believed that he would provide some offensive help for the Marlies. He ended up doing exactly that, leading the team in goals and points.
He does have 85 NHL games to his name, but not a single one of them occurred with the Leafs during the past regular season. It wasn’t due to a lack of effort on Agostino’s part, but more so with the log jam of forwards in front of him on the depth chart.
By The Numbers
As mentioned, Agostino had a strong season offensively for the Marlies as he registered 27 goals, 22 assists, and 49 points in just 53 games. Considering an AHL season is 76 games long, he was on pace to record roughly 38 goals, 32 assists, and 70 points. His play was one of the reasons why the team finished fourth in the AHL in goals-for prior to the pause per AHL.com.

The last time Agostino played in the NHL was the 2018-19 campaign and he did fairly well during a season split between the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils. At even strength, he collectively …

How I learned to love the (rumoured) Muzzin contract

By now we know a couple of things.
The Leafs have a contract ready to go for Jake Muzzin, but do to the collective agreement the Leafs can’t announce it until March 1st.
The contract is likely in the $5.5M range, it’s for four years, and it’s believed to be front loaded.
Via Darren Dreger:
“I believe there’s an agreement in place for Jake Muzzin to extend with the Toronto Maple Leafs [at] four years just over $5.5 million [per year],” Dreger said Thursday on Insider Trading. “I believe it’s a heavily front-loaded contract extension for Jake Muzzin. It will have some variety of forms of trade protection. Now, because of the tagging issues – the salary cap complications the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to wrestle with, I don’t believe that the Maple Leafs will announce are going to announce anything until perhaps later this month or early in March.”
All of these things fall into what should seemingly be considered good news, but given that Muzzin is older and showing some signs of wear and tear, we might need to …
