The NHL announces more changes to the Leafs’ schedule

With the Canucks forced to put their season on pause as the result of a COVID-19 outbreak within the organization, the schedule was surely going to be impacted by it. The NHL announced on Saturday those changes and they impact three Leafs games.

The @NHL announced today that, pending today’s test results, the @Canucks will re-open their facilities for practice on April 11, with a return to game play on April 16.

These changes are as follows:

Toronto @ Vancouver on April 19th, originally scheduled for 10 p.m., will now start at 9 p.m.
Vancouver @ Toronto, originally scheduled for April 30th, has been moved to April 29th at 7:30 p.m.
Toronto @ Ottawa, originally scheduled for May 10th, has been moved to May 12th at 7:30 p.m.

When looking at the new tweaks to the schedule, the most obvious is the ending of the Leafs’ regular season being pushed back an additional two days. They were initially supposed to have their season conclude on May 8th against the Canadiens, but this further delays when they will …

Leafs force game five after comeback 4-3 overtime win against Blue Jackets

The Toronto Maple Leafs have forced a decisive game five after a 4-3 comeback win against the Columbus Blue Jackets in overtime.
In a game that looked like it was doomed to be another disappointment for a Maple Leafs organization that continuously finds unique ways to set new lows, the team defied expectations by scoring three goals in the final four minutes to erase a 3-0 deficit and send the contest to overtime.
Columbus came out hard early, wasting no time in their effort to put the Leafs away, opening up the scoring with a goal 3:58 into the first period after Dubois waited out Marincin before sliding a low pass to Atkinson on the doorstep for a tap-in goal. History would repeat itself (a common theme for these Leafs) one period later where Columbus would again score under five minutes into the period with a Gavrikov wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle that found its way past Andersen.
Minutes later, 37-year old Jason Spezza attempted to spark some life into this team by fighting someone a decade younger than him. A fight that felt awfully similar to watching your dad throw down with the neighbour in that …

Leafs turn to Travis Dermott and Justin Holl as their new shutdown pair

The Leafs have been forced to deal with injuries on their blue line for the entire season, and after just 2 games with their full compliment of defencemen, they will again be without one of their most important players in Jake Muzzin.

All of Muzzin, Travis Dermott, Morgan Rielly, and Cody Ceci missed significant time this year throwing the Leafs defensive pairings into constant disarray. Through the turmoil, Muzzin has emerged as perhaps the most irreplaceable Leafs defenceman. Not only does he play a style of game that’s unique among Leafs defenders, but he’s formed a very effective shutdown pair with Justin Holl for much of the season.
With Muzzin again on the shelf, it looks as though Travis Dermott will be tasked with a larger role for at least the duration of the play-in round.

Thankfully, Dermott isn’t completely inexperienced with this kind of responsibility as he and Holl spent time together on the Leafs top pair when both Muzzin and Rielly were injured earlier this season. Though the pairing wasn& …
