Potential Raptors buyout target now off the market, joining Wizards

The Toronto Raptors still have one open roster spot after dealing away Goran Dragic and waiving Drew Eubanks, and many expect Masai Ujiri to use that slot on either converting Justin Champagnie’s two-way deal or signing a win-now veteran. If he is opting for the latter path, point guard Tomas Satoransky would’ve made sense. After […]

Will the Toronto Raptors regret waiving Ishmail Wainright?

Will the Toronto Raptors regret waiving Ishmail Wainright?

The Toronto Raptors had two open roster spots left before they solidified their opening day configuration, meaning that three non-guaranteed players Ishmail Wainright, Isaac Bonga, and Sam Dekker were vying for those two openings. Nick Nurse took his time coming to a decision, but his move was not what the Ugandan national team player wanted […]

Toronto Marlies announce opening night roster

The Toronto Marlies open their 2021 season tonight against the Manitoba Moose, which they’ve just released the roster for:

The Marlies announced today the hockey club’s 2020-21 opening night roster. #ForeverStartsHere

— Toronto Marlies (@TorontoMarlies) February 15, 2021

This roster consists of players who we’ve already seen play at the NHL level like Nick Robertson, Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren, Adam Brooks and Joey Anderson. Plus some old faces who we saw last season in the AHL, too.
After looking at the roster, the look for concern is at the goaltending. With Joseph Woll on the taxi squad with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ian Scott out of the lineup due to an injury, the Marlies are looking to lean on three goaltenders who are on professional and amateur tryouts. This will be interesting.
If you want to catch tonight’s game, you can watch them over at AHLTV.com (it should be for free).

Leafs take on McDavid and the Oilers for this first time this season

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers open their season series against each other this evening, the first of nine times the two franchises will face off. After a slow start to their season, the Oilers will be looking to prove that they didn’t attempt to build their team like an NBA roster by acquiring two superstars and expecting that to be enough. The Leafs meanwhile, will attempt to continue their hotstreak having won three of their first four contests during this 2021 season.
Both teams face their largest uncertainty in net with Frederik Andersen and Mikko Koskinen both posting sub-900 save percentages to start the season. While the Leafs have a literal backup plan with Jack Campbell showing promise early in the season, the Oilers are facing more concern after placing Mike Smith on LTIR and losing Anton Forsberg to waivers. With how highpowered both team’s offenses can be, seeing a backup be forced into the game in relief is more likely than either franchise would like to admit.
The Oilers fanbase has vocalised early concern about the team’s defensive issues, and for Leafs fans it’s been no different. Toronto will once again be going with …

The NHL and its players need to care

If you haven’t already read the open letter to the NHL by Matthew Henriques, I strongly encourage you start there before reading my post.
One of things that repeatedly gets said around the hockey world is that we’ve got the best sport, but we’ve got the worst league. Sometimes it would be nice if the NHL would stop proving that statement right, but yesterday was not the day.
On a day when the a move by the Milwaukee Bucks led to the postponement of the entire NBA schedule, and led to similar actions in the WNBA, MLS, and MLB, the NHL responded to these players boycotting their games by having a 33 second moment of reflection before one game with the words “End Racism” on the jumbotron.

Obviously this is an incredibly embarrassing moment for the league. At a time when people are demanding real action be taken on the continuous police shootings of African Americans and players in other sports are using their platform to demand real change be taken beyond simple lip service to a substantial human rights …
