Toronto Raptors: ESPN’s take on 2021 offseason is way too harsh

Toronto Raptors: ESPN’s take on 2021 offseason is way too harsh

The Toronto Raptors appear to be putting the finishing touches on the 2021 offseason, and considering that Masai Ujiri had to stomach the departure of Kyle Lowry while preparing to make their highest draft selection in over a decade, it’s fair to say that the tension in the air was palpable. Luckily, the front office […]

Marlies and Me: records are made to be broken

Marlies continue putting in work to make it to the end of their season.
Even in a week filled with loss, there are a good amount of positives that can be singled out.
When asked what he is most looking forward to, Head Coach Greg Moore looks to team growth as his answer. Specifically, “Just how much we can grow game-to-game.” There are a lot of opportunities to see this progress in the time the Marlies have left.  “Now we have a mix of guys who have been here all year, we have some veteran players and younger guys or just some fresh faces who have also played some pro hockey this year for some time now. With all those mixed variables and players, how quickly we can get them to come together as a team, how quickly we can get them to come together and look really clean and sharp on the ice,” Moore continues.
He also speaks to the effects the constant roster changes has on the team. Moore says, “There’s always challenges at this level with bodies coming and going but we have some really motivated young people that are here to learn and grow and …

Raptors: Chris Boucher could win Most Improved Player in 2020-21

Raptors: Chris Boucher could win Most Improved Player in 2020-21

Chris Boucher is quietly putting his name in the Most Improved Player debate. While a Toronto Raptors team that was expected to make it to the postseason has spent most of the 2020-21 season mired in the bottom of the standings, and subsequently fallen out of the spotlight, that shouldn’t erase the fact that Chris Boucher, […]

The Optimist’s Guide to the 2020 Blue Jays

I’ll be honest, putting the words “optimist” and “2020” together in a sentence doesn’t seem right.

From wildfires to a pandemic to murder hornets and so on and so on and so on, 2020 has already established itself as a cursed year. We’re just over halfway through and it feels like it’s been a decade.
But, while it might be difficult to be an optimist as we continue to navigate probably the strangest year in our lives, we have baseball to lean back on. Hope springs eternal in this silly game, so, if you need something to manifest some optimism about, here’s your remedy.
The COVID-19 pandemic shutting the world down for a few months has, among many others things, resulted in Major League Baseball opting to squeeze its season into a 60-game mad dash. Without a full 162-game slate for the law of averages to separate the pretenders from the contenders over the course of the dog days of summer, this mini-season is going to be absolutely jam-packed with randomness and chaos.
For a young team like the Blue Jays with a whole bunch of untapped potential …

Toronto Raptors: NBA season suspended indefinitely

The NBA has suspended its season amidst COVID-19 pandemic, putting Raptors basketball on hold. One day, we’ll all ask ourselves: “Where were you when the NBA world stood still?” On Wednesday night the NBA’s patient zero revealed itself. Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for COVID-19. The announcement that the NBA had indefinitely […]

The fact Gerrit Cole is just a dream for Blue Jays fans is sad

Gerrit Cole is in the process of putting together one of the best walk years in baseball history.

Heading into free agency for the first time in his career, Cole will also most likely be adding his first-ever Cy Young Award to his trophy case. He’s coming off a league-leading 2.50 ERA across 212 1/3 innings while an absurd 13.8 strikeouts per nine. To top it all off, Cole struck out 15 batters in a dominant showing against the Rays in Game 2 of the ALDS on Saturday.

The season (and post-season) Cole is carrying into free agency is something we haven’t seen in a long time. In fact, it could be the most impressive since Greg Maddux became a free agent back in 1992.
The closest comparables from recent memory to what Cole is doing right now would be David Price in 2015, Max Scherzer in 2014, and CC Sabathia in 2007. Like Cole, all of those guys were still in their 20s coming off of Cy Young calibre seasons, but nobody came anywhere near touching Cole’s strikeout totals from 2019.
There have been other amazing pre-free agent seasons since 1990, …
